Job Description and Key Responsibilities
As part of the Eye Care team, the Optician and Optometrist will be responsible for performing a broad range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and advisory duties in relation to vision correction, eye disease management, and patient education. You will conduct comprehensive eye examinations, assess refractive errors, prescribe corrective lenses, and detect early signs of eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration.
Additionally, you will work closely with patients to recommend and fit prescription eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other vision correction aids based on their unique needs. The Optician role will require deep familiarity with lens crafting and interpretation of optical prescriptions to advise patients on the most suitable frames and lenses. For the Optometrist role, a deeper involvement in diagnostic imaging, optical coherence tomography, and patient referral to ophthalmologists for surgical interventions will also be expected.
Candidates will be expected to keep accurate patient records, update treatment plans, and adhere to hospital documentation standards. Effective communication is essential, not only for clinical documentation but also for educating patients on the use and care of prescribed vision aids. You will also participate in community eye health programs and may be called upon to deliver eye health seminars or represent the hospital at health fairs. Qualifications and Requirements
To be eligible for consideration, candidates applying for the Optometrist position must possess a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from a recognized institution and be fully licensed by the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN). Applicants for the Optician role must possess a minimum of a Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Dispensing Optics or Optical Sciences, and must be registered with a relevant professional council or board.
Candidates must demonstrate a strong foundation in ocular anatomy, optical physics, diagnostic techniques, and patient-centered consultation. Previous clinical experience in a structured or hospital-based setting is highly preferred. For Optometrists, at least 2–3 years of post-licensure experience will be considered advantageous. Competency in handling sophisticated optical diagnostic equipment (autorefractors, tonometers, slit-lamp biomicroscopes, fundus cameras, etc.) is expected.
Candidates should have excellent interpersonal skills, be compassionate in patient interactions, and demonstrate ethical decision-making in clinical practice. Experience with electronic health records, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are also required.
